Exploring the limitless possibilities of the traditional Japanese drum, the taiko, Kodo is forging new directions for a vibrant living art-form. Led by renowned artistic director Tamasaburo Bando, one of the world’s leading Kabuki masters and a recognized Japanese Living Treasure, the athletic performers of Kodo honor and reimagine centuries-old Japanese musical and theatrical traditions.
In Japanese, the word Kodo holds a double meaning. It can be translated as “heartbeat,” the primal source of all rhythm. Kodo can also mean “children of the drum,” which reflects the group’s desire to play the drums with the simple heart of a child.
In 2011 Tamasaburo became the first Kodo artistic director to be appointed from outside the ensemble’s ranks.
Tamasaburo currently spends several months a year living and working with Kodo at their remote home on Sado Island.
