Each of the following recipes is the brainchild of a Traditional Chinese Medicine master with decades’ experience of treating diseases. They will help you better understand the beauty of the theory of “the food is the medicine”and help you treat your diseases.

Notes:

1 The medicines mentioned in the article are mainly food and therefore should be non-toxic.

2 To make it easier for our readers to understand, all the dosage units are given in the old Chinese system, for example the jin (around 597g ), liang (around 37.3 g) and qian (around 3.73g). The bowls mentioned in the recipes should be medium-sized ones.

3 All the medicines with the mark of * are available at the pharmacy.

4 The vinegar mentioned in the recipes is the common table vinegar. It will be declared where the white vinegar should be used.

5 The liquor mentioned in the recipes should be above 50 degrees.

6 The Food taboos listed during the treatment mean that certain foods should be avoided as they may affect the effectiveness of the recipe.

Recipes

1 Cold (initial stage): Decoct a scallion stalk (with the root) , sliced gingers (5 qian) and a bowl of water. Add moderate amount of brown sugar and drink while the soup is still hot (spare the scallion and ginger). Have a sleep immediately. The recovery comes with sweat .

2 Chronic cold: Daytime prescription is the same as the above one. Before your sleep at night, apply mashed garlic bulbs (the size of a grain of soybean) onto the sole of your feet (Yonnquan acupoint ) and wrap them with a cloth and unwrap the next morning. Repeat that for 2-3 days and you will see the recovery.

3 Headache (all kinds ): Instill two drops of raw white radish juice into the nostrils, twice a day. Repeat it for 4-5 days and you will see the headache is eradicated. During the treatment, do not eat pepper or black pepper.

4 Vertigo and dizziness: Mix up and steam one duck egg and 20 grains of adzuki beans. Eat that on an empty stomach every morning for seven straight days. Do not take liquor or spicy food during the treatment.

5 Insomnia and dreamful sleep: dip your feet into half basin of hot water with 1 liang of vinegar for 20 minutes before going to bed. Meanwhile, eat one or two raw scallion stalk.

6 Hacking cough (caused by cold or other reasons): prepare raw black sesame (3 qian, or 1 spoonful) and a moderate amount of crystal sugar. Mash and mix them with water. Drink the soup on an empty stomach every morning for 3 straight days. Eat less fish.

7 Cough with sputum (including acute bronchitis, bronchitis and the child bronchitis): Chop up the white radish (2 liang) and the Yali pear (2 liang). Mix them with a bowl of water and then boil. Add a moderate amount of brown sugar when eating. Take the soup for 3 straight days, twice a day. The medicine clears the heat and dissipates the phlegm.

8 Chronic bronchitis: Cook the luffa vine that endured the winter frost (1 liang), licorice (1 qian) along with a bowl of water. Drink the soup for 15-20 straight days, twice a day and you can have your chronic bronchitis eradicated. Do not smoke, drink liquor or eat spicy food during the treatment. The recipe preferably goes with the next one.

9 Chronic cough (Cough caused by emphysema or trachitis): Mix alums (1 liang and ground into powder) and vinegar. Apply the paste (the size of a grain of soybean) to the sole of your feet every night before going to bed and wrap them with a cloth. Unwrap the cloth every morning. Repeat that for 7 straight days and you will see an obvious improvement.

10 Asthma (or child asthma): Stir-fry the dried earthworms (0.5 jin) till they turn yellowish and grind them into powder. Mix the powder with white sugar water and drink the soup, twice a day (2 qian every time). Do not eat spicy food during the treatment.

11 Stomachache, grieved stomach, Gastroptosis or antral gastritis: scorch the garlic bulbs (1 liang, not skinned) till they turn black and mix them with a bowl of water. Drink on an empty stomach with a moderate amount of white sugar, twice a day. Repeat that for 7 straight days and you will see your diseases eradicated.

12 Gastric ulcer or duodenal ulcer: Stir-fry 30 egg shells till they turn black and grind them into powder. Stir-fry wheat flour (0.5 jin) till it turns black. Mix the two ingredients together and eat the mixture before breakfast and dinner with water, 2 qian (half spoonful) every time and twice a day. Normally one dosage will cure your disease and for the serious disease, take two.

13 High blood pressure and hyperlipidemia: Wrap the celery seeds (1 liang) with gauze. Boil it with water (10 jin) and drink a cup of it every morning, afternoon and evening. If you are ok with the spiciness, eat two garlics with each dosage. The recipe has a special effect on high blood pressure and hyperlipidemia.

14: Heart disease and coronary heart disease: Decoct peanut shell (1 liang) mixed with mung bean (5 qian). Drink a bowl of the decoction twice a day. It take half month for the medicine to take effect.

15: Enterogastritis and diarrhea: Stir-fry the wheat flour (0.5 liang) till it turns black. Mix it with a moderate amount of white sugar water and drink the soup before the meal, twice a day. It will take 2-3 days for the medicine to take effect. Do not eat persimmon, banana or greasy food during the treatment.
