Five Animal Frolics Qigong

The Hua Tuo Wu Xin Xi Qigong set was created by Hua Tuo (110-207 CE), one of the fathers of Chinese Medicine. The name translates as Five Animal Frolics or Five Animal Play. It is considered one of the oldest Qigong forms in existence.

The five animals are Tiger, Deer, Monkey, Bear, and Crane. Hua Tuo originally created these forms for healing and cultivation purposes. He encouraged patients to practice one or more of them until they began to sweat -- a common suggestion in TCM for fighting off illness in its early stage. Hua Tuo used animal imitation to cultivate the external attributes and internal treasures of the body. Externally, daily practice strengthens the muscles, bones, joints, and tendons. Internally, their practice helps cultivate Jing, Qi, and Shen. When practicing the forms, you want to be very playful, like animals in their natural state. For example you, can even visualize yourself as a fierce tiger or playful monkey.

The Five Animal form presented here is the original version of the form. It was passed down to us through a family line of traditional Chinese medical doctors who trace their lineage back to Hua Tuo.

The series will provide step-by-step instructions on the entire exercise. The exercise is suitable for all ages and experience levels.
