Hsing-I of Legends

Shawn Cartwright and Yinong Chong, August 2008

“A student like him comes along once every 500 years” That was a remark from the luminaries of the Chinese Boxing world about Kai Sai, or Mr. Christopher Casey. Wang Shu Shin, Shen Mou Hui, Chang Daih Moar, and Lo Man Kam are just a few of the internal kung fu grandmasters that taught Mr. Casey the secrets of their “hand.”

Chang Daih Moar was the head of the Hong Men Hui secret society. This organization provided great assistance to Dr. Sun Yatsen  in the liberation of China from the oppressive imperial rule.

The Hong Men Hui also played a critical role in the preservation of the true energy boxing arts and internal alchemy, first under the repression of the Ming and more recently during the Cultural Revolution.

Mr. Casey’s achievements in his energy studies made him the first Caucasian to be granted full membership in the Hong Men Huei, which gave him access to the highest level of indoor training – the so called “behind the curtain.”

Hsing-I Chuan (Xingyiquan) was one of the many arts Mr. Casey was privileged to learn. He was primarily trained it by Wang Shu Shin and Shen Mou Hui. Traditionally, the core forms of Hsing-I are the Five Element Forms and the 12 Animal Forms. As his teachers taught different sets of animals, Mr. Casey retained and synthesized the variations for the Chinese Energy Boxing system. It is our good fortune that we now have a set of 20 animals selected from the best of his teacher’s forms. Furthermore, Mr. Casey learned the Qigong and alchemy that accompanies the Hsing-I system – something that is rarely taught.

Mr. Casey only taught the forms to a select few indoor students. The Qigong and alchemy were only taught to Mr. Steve Alsup. TCCII director Mr. Shawn Cartwright is one of the few privileged to receive the “behind the door” training in Mr. Casey’s Qigong and alchemy from Mr. Alsup.

Mr. Cartwright will be teaching the Hsing-I Five Element form and its associated Qigong at the TCCII Five Elements seminar on August 2, 2008. It is the only time this material will be taught publicly this year.
